For our photo project we chose one of the fundamental elements of photography- expression and pose. Through this element we wanted to display emotions such as happiness, sadness/anxiety, friendship, moodiness etc.
The process:
The photo project was a dual project - done by me, Elin Dofeldt and Maria pop. We photographed all of our models in the same location, a small park. The photos were taken over the course of a week, due to timing, changes in presentation and editing. The process was over all fine, a little frustrating at times because portraying emotions can be difficult as we did not want to present only shallow and on the surface emotions and our models were friends, not necessarily qualified to act, however in the end all of the emotions were very well portrayed in the photos.
Our photos are all in black and white, as we wanted the background colors to be irrelevant and only focus on the subject, in this case the models. The black and white allows for an in depth view of the emotions.
Our models wore whatever they wanted, as the emotions are not tied to our style of clothing, we wanted them to feel comfortable and be themselves in order to achieve the most authentic portrayal.
1. Anxiety. We tried to get the facial expressions of worry, fear and obsessive thinking since these feelings are some of many that people might feel when they are feeling anxious. In the first picture you can see that the model is expressing obsessive thinking while in the second one she has mascara on her cheeks which gives us an impression that she has been crying.
2. Friendship, which portrays a few emotions that comes with friendships. In the first picture on of the models are staying with a very calm and comfortable facial expressions while the other one is smiling. In the second one both models are smiling and laughing which gives us an impression of happiness and having a great time with friends.
3. Happiness. These two photos shows happiness in two ways. One were she is just smiling with her whole face, you can see it on her eyes, while in the second one were she is smiling with her teeth she looks genuinely happy.
4. Moodiness / Grumpy
In this photo we can see that the model is in a grumpy mood just by looking at her face, she is not smiling, her cheeks are slitling going down and she is also rowling her eyes in the first picture which can give an impression of irritation or of her being bored.
